Honoring London’s Queer Community: The IoDF Barbie Collection Celebrates Vibrant Club Nights and Raises Awareness for Disappearing Safe Spaces.

Amelia Abrahams book Queer Intentions references and considers what queerness means today, and with this IoDF LDN edition of Barbie, it is truly a celebration of the queerness of today, within the real streets, parties and communities of LDN.

Each Barbie doll in the collection is meticulously crafted to capture the essence of these legendary nights. Taking on cultural codes, these Barbies are dressed in subversive androgynous fashion, vibrant colours, latex: the dolls embody the spirit of freedom and self-acceptance that defines the city’s thriving queer community.

Inclusivity lies at the core of our queer club Barbies. As Barbie has traditionally held an important place in the (ludic) education of young people, it felt important to us to engage with the brand’s power to educate and open up self-representation for a whole host of people newly engaged with the franchise. Following on from IoDF’s core pillars of Diversity, Inclusion, Innovation and Education, we hope to inspire young people to embrace their identities and challenge traditional conventions of self-expression.

“The Barbie brand and catalogue has diversified so much since it’s inception – ‘Barbie’ as a brand is now so much more than the fantasy ideal of the blonde, white, cis female original, the concept has evolved and grown past the binary. For us at IoDF we saw an opportunity to celebrate our LDN, our home and the need for these fast disappearing safe LGBTQI+ places.”- IoDF Co-Founder & CEO, Leanne Elliott-Young
