FREE RANGE: UCA ROCHESTER IS A COURSE THAT USES ART AS A SELF-EXPRESSION

Photography and fashion photography at UCA Rochester is a course that uses art as a self-expression. As students, we are given the freedom to discuss various social issues and personal concerns that relate to us as artists. Our final year has bought the ability to delve deeper into the areas of photography that really interest us, and Free Range has allowed us to consider how we want that to be exhibited. The class’s final work shows a variation from documentary photography spanning all the way through to fashion with coinciding themes and ideas. A lot of the work presented in the exhibition discusses themes of family, heritage and childhood with students really trying to understand their background and experiences. Students are all extremely grateful to be exhibiting at Free Range and are excited to be able to present their talent to a wider audience in London.

Caitlin Iles

Caitlin Iles is a photographer from Birmingham. Within her work she focuses on style and music through the mediums of fashion and documentary photography. Iles’ new project ‘My Old Man’ captures the life of her father now as a working family man opposed to his life in the late 80’s early 90’s as a raver, this is shown through a series of photographs and film. This project aims to show how life changes, as we grow older and how our past passions often become memories. In all respects this project has allowed a space for Iles’ father to reminisce and remember his life as one of the participators in illegal raving and the Britain’s dance music scene.

Grace Elliott

Grace Elliott

Grace Elliott’s work questions the function of the garment, examining not only its role in fashion but also its role within everyday life, questioning how clothing can effect concepts of normativity and social acceptability. With inspiration stemming from childhood games to Haruki Murakami’s Samsa in Love, Elliott takes a humorous and playful approach to her work re-imagining every day outfits in new, unusual and impractical ways.

Louise Yalim

Louise Yalim

Louise Yalim’s project is focusing on the grief of her father and how she can represent it in a way that is comfortable and in a way that is not too revealing. This is accomplished through the utilization of broken mirrors within an array of landscapes, while also incorporating archival photography to enhance feelings of loss. Adopting the mirrors as a visual metaphor for her emotional feelings. She has experimented with family photos, starting with the oldest photograph within this personal collection. The photographs have been installed following poetic landscapes of a place where she found peace.
