THE MIDDLE HOUSE: DESIGN, LUXURY AND ARTISTIC FLAIR

Shanghai’s The Middle House is a sanctuary of design, luxury artistic flair and aesthetic ingenuity where creative design and architecture meet functionality. Blending local culture, a curated art programme, unmatched luxury and a killer location this is one of our favourite places to stay whilst in Shanghai.

Located in the historic Dazhongli, this stylish hotel offers a unique mix of seclusion and accessibility, perfect for the discerning traveller. The hotel is strategically nestled in the heart of Shanghai’s premier shopping district with a bustling shopping mall of design-led names just a direct elevator ride away and all accessible from the hotel’s third floor.

With its dark-panelled façade, The Middle House exudes understated charm and a welcoming atmosphere. Its design philosophy, a harmonious blend of The House Collective brand’s essence and Lissoni & Partners’ vision creates a space that celebrates luxury living and serenity.

ROOMS

The hotel boasts 111 meticulously designed rooms, each ranging from 50 to 90 square meters, showcasing a masterclass in interior design. Our corner room seamlessly blends expansive space, hardwood flooring, and floor-to-ceiling windows, transforming the city skyline into a captivating living art piece.

Careful consideration is given to the architectural layout of each room. The bed headboard is ingeniously affixed to the walk-in closet wall, while the living area bench, spanning from wall to wall beside the windows, serves not only as furniture but as an integral part of the room’s structure. Oriental-style nightstands and modern table lamps complement contemporary furnishings, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Bespoke creations add an innovative yet familiar touch, fostering a homely and cosy ambience.

Meet Mr. Goodnight, the master cord strategically placed next to the bed, effortlessly extinguishing all lights with a single touch—a thoughtful design flourish that eliminates the hassle often encountered in other design hotels when trying to figure out how to turn off various light fixtures.

Enjoy breathtaking views of the cityscape from your room, enhanced by semi-transparent dividers that maintain an airy atmosphere while seamlessly integrating into the overall design. Take a moment to unwind in the almond-shaped bathtub, surrounded by the soothing aroma of Geranium-infused Bamford bath and body products, creating a perfect retreat within the vibrant cityscape.

SUSTAINABILITY

At the forefront of sustainability, The Middle House embraces a minimalist ethos, utilising recyclable materials and presenting thoughtfully curated locally sourced à la carte menus to combat food wastage. The commitment extends to eco-friendly cleaning products, paperless itineraries, and e-newspapers, showcasing a dedication to reducing environmental impact.

Water conservation is not just a priority but a serious commitment, exemplified by meticulous practices throughout the property. The conscientious choice of employing hybrid cars reinforces the establishment’s green initiatives, ensuring that even transportation aligns with eco-friendly principles.

For those seeking an eco-conscious exploration, complimentary House bicycles are at your disposal. We recommend embarking on a scenic ride along the Huangpu River—an invigorating and safe two-wheel adventure that allows you to connect with the surroundings while minimising your carbon footprint. The Middle House invites you to indulge in a sustainable and immersive experience, where every thoughtful choice contributes to a greener, more responsible hospitality.

ART

‘Encounters Across Cultures’, The House Collective’s biennial program, is an artistic collaboration exploring four cities through multi-sensory installations which blend art, music and technology. The program, reflecting the brand’s commitment to art and culture, showcases global collaboration and creativity. The program is hosted in the Collective’s properties in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing, offering immersive experiences where viewers can interact with the installations using touch, sight, and sound.

This initiative aims to share diverse emotional journeys and foster a sense of connection among people from different backgrounds.

Within The House Collection, each property has a unique array of permanent installations. The Middle House, in particular, unveils a curated collection themed “I Dream of China,” serving as a captivating showcase of local Chinese and international artists. This collection seamlessly mirrors the artistic crossroads that define the vibrant tapestry of Shanghai.

Immersed in the porcelain narrative drawn from the historic town of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province, each piece within this thematic collection tells a compelling story. These artworks become a visual dialogue, inviting viewers to interpret and appreciate the rich cultural layers embedded in every stroke and form.
