WALALA MANSIONS AT VICTORIA PARK, HONG KONG

Leading international artist and purveyor of positivity, Camille Walala is bringing a large scale installation to Hong Kong for a creative tourism and placemaking project called Design District Hong Kong (#ddHK).

Taking inspiration from Walala’s Landmark Project for the 15th anniversary of London Design Festival, Villa Walala (a huge inflatable structure adorned with the artist’s iconic use of colour and geometric patterns) is a new installation which creates a boisterously colourful, interactive playscape in Victoria Park; the urban oasis in Hong Kong.

Drawing on influences of the Memphis Movement, Walala fuses vibrant colours and bold patterns, combining optimistic typography and exuberant geometries to transform Victoria Park into a Londonish Manor that stimulates the senses and inspires joy. Starting from the uniquely patterned Water Fountain at the park’s main entrance, you can enjoy the fresh green and breeze of the manor through the Memphis-styled Boulevard leading to the central lawn, where you will be greeted the exotic inflated ‘Walala Mansions’ enlightened with playful furniture sets. The mansion stands in the bustling heart of Causeway Bay to provide a unique place for the enjoyment of passers-by, as it delightfully contrasts with surrounding modernistic-styled office and residential blocks, adding something whimsical and colourful to the cityscape.

Visitors are invited to embrace design and art with all your senses and use it as a hub for communication and exchange. Local creative partner Hattrick Creative will dress up this Londonish Manor with European festive works. The design works are also enhanced with Augmented Reality to bring about an immersive interactive experience; a simple scan using your phone triggers surprises, and you will find the wayfinding function which lies beneath the work.

Alongside the British pieces, CityProg also collaborates with local creatives and brands to bring a mix of happenings across 16 anchor site partners. Joined together with Hong Kong Design Centre seven districts including Wan Chai, Sham Shui Po, Tsuen Wan, Fo Tan, To Kwa Wan, North Point and Chai Wan will host 100+ satellite events and four Design EduVation projects scattered throughout the entire city to encourage public engagement and foster design thinking.
