ANNA TALVI: GARMENTS INTREPID AND FEARLESS TRAVELLERS

With civilian space travel tantalisingly close, Royal College of Art MA graduate Anna Talvi explores the garments intrepid and fearless travellers might need for a prolonged stay in microgravity environments.

Previously studying mathematics and physics, competing as an equestrian athlete and training at a men’s tailor this odd combination has led Anna to work on an interdisciplinary project; combining science, technology and design from the very start.

“I am developing an optimal set of garments for prolonged stay in microgravity environments. This set is engineered to help keep the astronauts’ and future space travellers’ bodies fit and healthy when living in space stations and habitats”.

But this is more than utilitarian fashion with Anna working with researchers, scientists, medical doctors and private companies, to understand what happens to the human body in space and how to target the main physiological changes when in weightlessness.

“One of the biggest challenges is finding countermeasures to the substantial bone loss and muscle atrophy when living in space for longer periods of time. I am developing an antagonist exomuscle bodysuit which helps to keep the floating body fit. Smart membranes also aid the changes in cardiovascular and thermo-physiological systems.”

The bodysuit comes with very lightweight antibacterial base layer membranes: foot liners, underwear and a top with attention taken to the limited garment care possible in space; no washing machines for example, so materials need to be easy care and non-crease.

From textile specifically developed for space Anna’s shorts and t-shirt designs are to be worn daily as well as during exercise, keeping them light and designed for maximum comfort and functionality.

Even space dining and socialising has been thought of. “I have developed a set of tailored shirts and long trousers that is a bit more neat and formal. It has all the functions and technicalities required but in a more elegant format.”
