FIVE DESIGNERS TRANSFORM ART, ARCHITECTURE AND COLOUR INTO RUGS FOR LDF

FLOOR_STORY’s latest collaborations bring together bold colour, urban architecture, textile traditions and community-led design in a new exhibition for London Design Festival and Shoreditch Design Week.

This September, East London rug studio FLOOR_STORY will unveil five new designs created with Coco Lom, House of Quinn, Lakwena Maciver, Les Keepers and POoR Collective.

Presented in partnership with Sancal and curated by Trifle* Creative, the exhibition will transform FLOOR_STORY’s Shoreditch showroom into a series of intimate roomsets, pairing the new rugs with Sancal’s playful furniture.

Running from 15 to 18 September, the show brings five distinct creative practices into the language of rug-making.

Coco Lom: East London Lines

Coco Lom’s East London Lines (pictured top) takes inspiration from her daily commute on the London Overground. Architectural forms, signage, light and glass are translated into speckled shapes and contrasting blocks of blue, green, sage and monochrome. The rug is tufted in India using 100% New Zealand wool.

“I’ve lived in Hackney my whole life, and I’ve always loved the bold patterns and geometric shapes that run throughout the route, both on the trains and across all of the stations. I’ve used this collection of photos as inspiration for my design, and I love the idea that my rug tells a playful visual story of a journey on the overground.”

House of Quinn: Arrangement

For Arrangement, textile artist Julius Arthur of House of Quinn works with weave for the first time. Traditional rug borders and central motifs are reinterpreted through painted brushstrokes, fabric collage and grainy colour blocking. Hand-knotted in Nepal from 100% Tibetan wool, the finished piece brings the feel of a wall-based artwork to the floor.

“I wanted to bring an artwork you’d typically see on the wall to the floor, a piece that functions as an anchor or grounding element in a space, to harmonise with the elements that make up an interior space.”

Lakwena Maciver: HOME PEACE

Lakwena Maciver introduces her signature neon shades into FLOOR_STORY’s collection for the first time with HOME PEACE. The tufted rug combines neon yellow, green and orange with monochrome, graphic arches and a typography border. Made in India from 100% New Zealand wool, the design explores home, rest and belonging.

“I see the patterns and colours as flowing out from the centre of the carpet. With all of my work, my hope is always that it will bring hope and life to the spaces that it lives in. In this piece I’m thinking specifically about home and peace, the sense of belonging and rest that those words allude to and that I hope these rugs will bring to the spaces they travel.”

Les Keepers: Jogakbo

Designed by Les Keepers, Jogakbo celebrates togetherness and the beauty found in irregularity. Hand-painted geometric lines overlap across a palette of clay reds, rosy pinks and lemon yellow. Made from 100% wool, the rug is finished with a cut-and-loop pile that adds further texture.

The design reflects Les Keepers’ focus on shared experience, mindful production and working “from stitch to surface”.

POoR Collective: POWER

POoR Collective’s POWER translates the architecture of London tower blocks into a flatwoven rug. Its intersecting lines, banding and circular motifs draw particularly on the deck-access features of Trellick Tower. Handwoven in Mirzapur, India from 100% New Zealand wool, the design is available in several colourways.

“Because our practice regularly works with the communities and young people from the housing estates in various neighbourhoods around the city, it felt important not only to reference the architectural language but also to celebrate it and to recognise the cultural and social significance of these buildings within the city.” Ben Spry, POoR Collective.

Five Creative Worlds, Reworked in Wool

Across the collection, a daily commute becomes a graphic study, painterly marks move from wall to floor, neon colour explores belonging, patchwork celebrates connection and tower-block architecture becomes a symbol of collective energy.

FLOOR_STORY combines traditional craft with contemporary design, working with both emerging and established creatives. Its handmade rugs are fair trade and recognised by Label STEP. The company is also a certified B Corporation.
