Jean-Michel Gathy, a titan of architecture and interior design and the principal designer at Denniston, has carved a niche in creating some of the most luxurious hotels worldwide. Despite their urban settings, Gathy’s new projects in Tokyo and Dubai masterfully offer sanctuaries of peace, providing a much-needed retreat from the urban frenzy. These properties have quickly garnered acclaim, with the Janu Tokyo being recognised as housing one of Tokyo’s largest wellness centres and One&Only One Za’abeel in Dubai celebrated as a cantilevered marvel in architectural design.

One&Only One Za’abeel, Dubai
In the vibrant heart of Dubai, the One&Only One Za’abeel stands as the world’s first vertical urban resort, an architectural beacon in this futuristic city. Gathy’s design draws inspiration from its Za’abeel location, which translates to ‘white sand’ in the local Emirati dialect. This influence is subtly integrated into the resort’s aesthetic through a soothing neutral colour palette and delicate sand motifs across textiles, artwork, and sculptural lighting. The resort aims to connect visitors with Dubai’s unique charm and pulsating energy, offering a serene yet soulful retreat.

Janu Tokyo
Marking its debut in March 2024, Janu, Aman’s spirited sister brand, introduced its first property in Tokyo. Janu Tokyo is designed as a vibrant social hub, offering a lively contrast to Aman’s serene exclusivity. It aims to strike a balance between personal fulfilment and relaxation, fostering a community for those seeking purpose and peace. Conde Nast Traveller praises it as a “cocoon of tranquillity,” a space that reflects Tokyo’s rich cultural tapestry and inspires connection, balance, and exploration.
